NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — As a steady rain fell Wednesday night, there were no visible signs of violence outside a modest brick home on Sunset Road, a short street just east of Rufe Snow Drive.
There were no makeshift memorials, no crime-scene tape.
A silver pickup sat in the driveway. And a colorful sign on the front door read: "Welcome to Paradise."
Late Tuesday, Kristin Jones, 55, was standing with her daughter and grandchildren outside the house when a gunman approached and sprayed the area with bullets, police said.
Kristin Jones and her 17-year-old grandson, Tyler Heiliger, were fatally shot, police said. Kristin’s daughter, Tamara Jones, 37, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said. Her condition could not be learned Wednesday night.
Tamara Jones’ 18-month-old son was not wounded, and her 11-year-old daughter was not present, police said.
The gunman then walked into the house and killed himself. A handgun was found near his body, police said.
Investigators believe that he was Tamara Jones’ estranged boyfriend. Authorities had not released the gunman’s name or further details of the relationship late Wednesday.
A breakup led to the shooting, police Detective Keith Bauman said. "He arrived and within minutes, the shooting started," Bauman said.
Toddler found at scene
Neighbors called 911 shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after hearing gunshots at the house.
Before police arrived, a neighbor saw the toddler near the garage and whisked him away, authorities said. The boy was turned over to police, who placed the child with relatives.
Officers found Kristin Jones bleeding in the driveway. Heiliger was found dead in the garage, where Tamara Jones lay wounded, police said. Officers then searched the house and found the dead gunman.
Kristin Jones was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth and died about an hour later, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.
It was the second apparent case of domestic violence this week in Tarrant County. Early Sunday in Fort Worth, police say the estranged boyfriend of a Fort Worth woman sneaked into her house and stabbed her multiple times with a kitchen knife. The woman, Alma Garcia, died, and the suspect, 41-year-old Abel Noe Dominguez, was taken into custody after he cut his wrists.
North Richland Hills has had two homicides each of the last two years.
