DAILYKENN.com -- So how's that diversity thing working out?

The melting pot at Eastside Memorial High School in Austin, Texas boiled over last week.

News reports say the school staff was preoccupied with a "professional development class that morning" leaving students unattended in the cafeteria until 10:30 a.m.

(In related news, two parents are being investigated in the Washington, D.C. are for allowing their children to walk home from the park unattended.)

The cafeteria erupted in a full-scale brawl with punches and chair thrown and tables overturned. Students-of-color can be seen pounding on a white male student. Two were arrested.

The multicultural menagerie included whites, blacks, browns, and at least one female in a Muslim burqa. Indeed, white people also brawl, but they typically are required to be wearing ice skates and playing hockey before the punching begins.

• Government schools make pathetic surrogate parents. Teachers are preoccupied with white-privilege training classes while white students are being assaulted.

• Such fighting was an ordinary part of high school in the late 1960s and early 1970s when I attended an urban school in Indianapolis. The only differences are: (a) We had no video devices to record the melees in the late 60s, (b) there was no social media for uploading videos if we had them and, (c) no one wore klan robes, er, eh, burqas to school.

One would think after 45 years government school administrators would get a clue regarding diversity.

Two students were arrested. We're guessing one was the white kid.

Officers charged two students and are continuing to review footage after a fight sent one student to the hospital at Eastside Memorial High School on Thursday morning.

A video of the brawl, posted to LiveLeak, shows students hurling chairs, toppling tables and throwing punches, and there were no adults to be seen supervising the students.

"It was pretty wild, people were throwing chairs, yelling across the hall and all kinds of different stuff," said freshman Antonio Martinez, who went inside the school cafeteria when the fight began. "It felt kind of dangerous in there, like there were no teacher or staff or anyone watching."

According to Austin ISD Police Chief Eric Mendez, the teachers had a professional development class that morning. School was scheduled to begin late at 10:15 a.m., so students waited in the cafeteria under the supervision of a student resource officer and a security guard. The guard and officer stepped out to search for a student described as "agitated" elsewhere on campus, Mendez said, and the fight broke out after they left.

Two students were charged, but more charges could be pending, according to Mendez.

"That doesn't end the investigation. We'll continue to look at everybody's take or everybody's part in the incident and go from there and determine if we need to charge any other students in the incident," Mendez said.

In the days since the fight, the video has gone viral.
