Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra), Aug 24 (IANS) [color="Red"]Giving in to strong protests by the 1,000 strong Jewish community, a restaurant in this Mumbai suburb Thursday agreed to change its name 'Hitler's Cross' and remove all signs and symbols associated with the Nazi dictator from its premises.

A joint statement was issued to this effect by the restaurant owners and the Indian Jewish Federation, which had organised the protest against the name, bringing to an end the controversy, which had erupted since Aug 18, when the restaurant opened.

'We, the owners and operators of the restaurant opened at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, acknowledge that the name adopted by us for our restaurant was most inappropriate.

'We have decided to change the name of our restaurant and remove all signs and articles associated with Hitler and Nazism in and around the restaurant,' the statement said. The new name of the restaurant was not immediately known.

'The Jewish community of India is relieved at the decision to change the name of the restaurant,' it said.

The restaurant's name had enraged the city's Jewish community and made them unite to protest.

Earlier, the management of the controversial eatery had removed a photograph of Hitler - dressed in full military fatigues, with the trademark swastika armband on his sleeve - from the restaurant's window after protests by Mumbai's Jews. But it had refused to change the name.

The swastika, reviled in many parts of the world for its association with Nazi Germany, is also an ancient Hindu religious symbol and is seen as a symbol of prosperity. The Nazi symbol is the diagonal clockwise continuation.

[color="red"]There are about 5,500 Jews in India, mostly in Mumbai, Kochi (Kerala), north-east and some in Delhi and other cities.
