Police Kill Man Named In Amber Alert; Girl OK

SEYMOUR, Ind. -- Officers on Thursday fatally shot a Seymour man accused of threatening and leaving home with his 2-year-old daughter, who was found safe, the Indiana State Police said.

Authorities said a tip allowed them to find Thomas J. Evans and his daughter, Andrea Evans, at a restaurant just north of Seymour at about 5:45 p.m. Evans tried to flee in a car but crashed into a police cruiser.

A state trooper and Seymour police officers fired at him after they saw Evans had a gun, state police said.

Neither Andrea -- for whom an Amber Alert was issued Wednesday -- nor the police officers were injured, authorities said.

The girl was taken from the car and held by police officers until her mother arrived at the scene, within miles of their southern Indiana home.

"I asked her (Andrea) if she was OK and she said, 'No,' but she appeared to be OK," city police Cpl. Ernie Davidson said. "There were no visible injuries."

Investigators found a loaded and cocked handgun in Evans' car, Seymour Police Chief Craig Hayes said.

State police said someone at the Rockford Place restaurant along Indiana 11 had called 911 to say Evans and his daughter were there.

Authorities said Thomas Evans took his daughter from their Seymour house Wednesday morning after he tied up his wife. The woman, who freed herself from her bindings and ran to a neighbor for help, told investigators he had threatened to harm the girl if the woman talked to police.

Police said that before Thomas Evans and his daughter disappeared, he tied his wife's wrists and ankles a few times at their home during a dispute that lasted a few days.

An arrest warrant was issued for Thomas Evans on a felony charge of criminal confinement against his wife.
