"As a black male, it's the looks that you get from your own race, specifically black females," said Wade, a captain in the Air Force. "They're looking at you like you sold out the race."

Figures from the 2000 census put the number of interracial marriages in the United States at 5.7 percent. The number of unions between men and women of different races was even greater in the military.

"People don't care on base, and it's because there are so many interracial couples in the military that it's just not a big deal," said Wanda Wade.

Research by a Utah sociologist found that those in the armed services are more likely to marry outside their race because they are more tolerant as a result of their extensive travel and training.

Michael Broderick, a second lieutenant in the Air Force, agrees with Jacobson's finding. Broderick, in training at Maxwell, is marrying Anjulie Stanford next summer. He's white, and she's black.

"The military environment is such that people from all over the world and from every race interact with each other, and it's a much more accepting environment," he said.

The military works hard to create a racially accepting environment, said Staff Sgt. Melinda Finholm, who works in Maxwell's military equal opportunity office.

"We have to work together to get the mission accomplished," Finholm said. "There's no room for 'oh, I don't get along with him because he's Asian,' or things of that nature."

Finholm, who is white and engaged to a black man, teaches racial diversity classes for Air Force members.

Finholm said exposure is a major reason why the military has more interracial marriages. She uses her fiancé, who grew up in a majority African-American community in Louisiana, as an example.

"It wasn't until he got his first duty station in Ohio that he was introduced to new ways of thinking, new cultures and new norms," she said. "It opened his mind. It's just the exposure. You realize that it's perfectly normal and acceptable."

Broderick, Finholm and the Wades say the military isn't perfect but is years ahead of general society.
