Is it salmon or is it 'Frankenfish?': Genetically modified fish could hit shelves soon
Ready your dinner plates for what some are calling “Frankenfish”.
A genetically engineered Atlantic salmon could hit supermarkets soon, reports the Washington Post.
The FDA is approaching a decision on what could be the first genetically modified animal to be sold as food. Public hearings could start this fall, according to the company, AquaBounty Technologies.
AquaBounty, based in Waltham, Massachusetts, is pushing to farm this quick-maturing fish. Normally, it takes salmon three years to reach market size. But, this new breed grows at twice the normal rate, meaning it would be ready to sell within 18 months.
