12 people hurt in Israeli arms center explosion

JERUSALEM (AP) -- -- An explosion injured 12 people Monday at an Israeli arms development center, Rafael, the weapons development arm of Israel's Defense Ministry, said in a statement.

The explosion occurred as a result of a faulty battery in a diesel engine operating "in an enclosed area" of the center, according to the statement.

The blast was heard across Haifa Bay in northern Israel. Ambulances raced to the scene.
