Didn’t have room in the title for the entire quote.

"it is now basically mathematically impossible for either Clinton or Obama to win the nomination through the regular voting process"

They are tied with about 840 delegates each (840-831), but 2025 are needed to nominate, and only 1556 are left in play. Since the delegates are split up by "proportional representation," NEITHER of them has any chance to take 1185 out of those 1556 (more than 3/4), so ... the superdelegates will decide the convention, and all the primaries have basically been for the benefit of cable news rather than for the people.

What the article doesn't say is that the Democratic Party has basically created the system so that this always happens in any competitive race. 2025 delegates are needed to nominate, and 3253 are decided in primaries and caucuses. In order to win the nomination through primaries alone, therefore, one candidate would have to win more than 60% of the delegates. A 60-40 split is unlikely even in a two-way race in America, but remember that the game always starts with more than two players, making it even harder for any one to garner 60%. A percentage like 60% might happen in winner-take-all contests, but with proportional representation, everyone gets a little chunk here and there. Except maybe Mike Gravel.

The system has been set up to deceive the Democratic Party voters into thinking they are determining the winner ... until the final stage when the party machine actually gets to make the call. Oh, brave new world.
