COLUMBUS, Ga. --
The Georgia High School Association has granted a hardship waiver to a "Jena 6" student, making him eligible to play football for Shaw High School in Columbus this season.

The association on Monday waived its eight-semester rule for Robert Bailey Jr. He is one of six black teens from Jena High School in Louisiana charged with beating a white student in December 2006.

Under the eight-semester rule, a student's can only play interscholastic sports for eight consecutive semesters. Bailey is technically in his ninth semester of high school.

Shaw football coaches and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund helped Bailey present the hardship appeal to GHSA's 35-member executive committee in a closed session Monday.

Bailey still faces second-degree battery and conspiracy charges in Louisiana.
