JERSEY CITY -- Police officers fired a total of 50 shots during a fierce gun battle last week that left one officer dead and four other officers injured, a report in the Jersey Journal said.

According to the report, officials said Hassian Hosendove, one of the two suspects involved in the shootout, was shot 30 times after he fired on police officers with a shotgun in the Reed Street apartment. During the autopsy on Hosendove's alleged accomplice, Amanda Anderson, one bullet was removed from the base of her skull, officials told the Jersey Journal. Both were killed at the scene.

Police officer Marc DiNardo, a 10-year veteran of the force, was hit in the face during the shootout and died after days on life support.

The shootout began around 6:45 a.m. Thursday, when DiNardo and other members of an elite emergency-services unit raided Shakur's and Anderson's apartment after Shakur shot two officers on the street earlier in the morning. The apartment shootout followed hours of surveillance by city Detective Marc Lavelle and Lt. Michael Kelly. The pair had been watching a red Ford Focus believed to have been the getaway car in a June 18 shooting. In that case, two people ambushed a van driver as he arrived for work at 30 Minute Oil Change on Broadway in an industrial section of the city.

Five Jersey City police officers shot
A Jersey City cop wounded in a shootout last week died Tuesday after he was taken off life support - and his organs are giving new hope to transplant patients.

Five organs were recovered from Officer Marc DiNardo, and all were given to desperately ill patients, the New Jersey Organ Donation Sharing Network said.

DiNardo - who died on a day seven other Jersey City cops were injured during a gun battle - was shot in the face during a firefight Thursday with robbery suspects that left four cops wounded.

He was revived several times before he stabilized in critical condition. He was declared brain-dead Monday and removed from support early yesterday.

"I feel terrible," said Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy. "We were hoping for a miracle, but those hopes were dashed."

DiNardo, a 10-year veteran, leaves a wife and three children, ages 1 to 4.

Hours before his death, Jersey City officers dodged bullets pursuing three robbers.

The teenage gunmen rammed police cruisers and opened fire on officers twice during a chase that began after an attempted armed robbery.

No one was shot, but seven officers suffered minor injuries, bringing to 15 the number of cops injured in the city.

"I hope this is just an anomaly and it passes quickly," Deputy Police Chief Peter Nalbach said. "Fifteen is a lot for us."

There also were three shootings in six hours in nearby Newark on Monday that left nine people wounded and three dead.

The first shooting happened shortly after 1:30 p.m., when five people were shot in a driveby.

The second was a few miles away just before 4 p.m. At least two men got out of a car and began firing, killing two.

Two others were wounded in a shooting about 7 p.m. a few miles away.
