In 2006, Novak wrote an opinion piece for the Washington Post calling on Bush to do something about the plight of the Palestinian Christians. Citing the encircling of Christianity's Holy city, Bethlehem, by a tall cement barrier used as a security fence to deter terrorism by Israel, Novak appealed to Christians in the US to at least defend the small minority of Christians in Palestine. His remarks criticized the Israeli government for allowing the continuation of settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Reading this, I literally pictured Mason frothing at the mouth. This hysterical hatred is so typical. As are the scatological/sexual references yids seem to work into every topic - bed-wetting, orgasming etc.

Novak plays the old "American Jewish lobby" card -- implying that alleged Jewish power, influence, and financial status amount to a controlling machine -- before which politicians and the military cower in fear and shrink back from daring to criticize Israel's purported wrong-doings.

I'm sure FOX News and their ADL sub-plotters (or maybe its the other way around) originally intended to have comedian Jackie Mason on Neil Cavuto's late-afternoon television show to pile on Mel Gibson after his drunken driving arrest, ragging on him about what a horrible anti-Semite he is. But instead, Mason slammed not only all the weasels and worms that were going after Gibson, but he also directly targeted Abe Foxman for being the biggest racist around. After his interview was done, I would have given anything to be a fly on the wall in the control room as cups were being thrown at the wall and voices were screaming on the telephone.

Novak is a jew. He's a media darling. He can't be "anti-Semitic" unless he gave his job to a nonjew and sewed his lips shut because "he's a jew and there's too many of them in the public eye". Many American Jews wring their hands in anguish as the hope for peace in the Middle East wanes. Some people in Israel are agonizing over their nation's soul and there are pilots who have followed the military moral code when deliberately missing civilian targets in Lebanon. European leaders are calling on Israel to exercise restraint.

Amidst all of this wishy-washy liberal drivel, the voice of former Soviet Jews in Israel and the United States rings with unshakable clarity: "Hit hard so that they will remember. Then you'll have peace."

You can take the boy out of the Soviet Union, but you can't take the Soviet Union out of the boy.

Communism proposed a radical reorganization of society, accompanied by the physical suppression of propertied classes, to usher in nothing less than universal happiness. As former Soviet citizens crossed the border out of the country, they clung to the same ideological paradigm -- namely, the yearning for definitive solutions and a belief in simple, clear-cut and preferably bloody methods. Switching signs and becoming right-wingers was easy. Extremes of different types are a lot closer to each other than they are to the center.

Not surprisingly, many prominent American neoconservatives began life as Trotskyites -- except for Max Boot, who was born in the Soviet Union.

Communists liked to amalgamate people into broad groupings -- the proletariat, the peasantry, the intelligentsia. Your collective affiliation determines your worldview, ideology and behavior.

Liberal democracy has helped neutralize most separatist movements on the continent. Some -- the Flemish in Belgium, the German speakers in Italy and the Corsicans -- have faded from memory. It is similarly hard to remember that Greece, Spain and Portugal were only recently ruled by repressive regimes -- and have fought nasty civil wars in living memory. Because they wanted to join united Europe, Latvia and the Slovak Republic have cleaned up their act. For the same reason, Serbs, Croats, Ukrainians and Turks are on their best behavior.

It is conceivable that even Russia might one day trade its "managed democracy" for the more common variety in order to be part of Europe.

There has never been much room for liberalism in the Middle East. But from today's perspective, the Middle East circa 1999 looms like some halcyon golden age of harmony and hope. That was before U.S. President George W. Bush and former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, with their radical right-wing solutions, turned the region into a churning nightmare safe for theocracy and terror and seething with sectarian hatred -- into a pocket version of George Orwell's "1984." As he eggs on the two sides to fight to a lasting ceasefire, Bush might as well come out and quote Orwell's newspeak directly: "War is Peace."

Ex-Soviet immigrants to Israel should feel right at home. Their massive presence may not have been a decisive factor in the hardening of attitudes in Israel, but they will probably prevent the emergence of any peace movement through the electoral system for a long time to come. Curiously, however, Jews from the former Soviet Union who still choose to emigrate apparently go not to Israel but -- amazingly -- to Germany.
