An Orthodox Jewish man was hit on the head with a baseball bat in Lakewood tonight, leaving him with life-threatening injuries as authorities searched for suspects, police said.

The unidentified beating victim, who appeared to be in his mid-20s, was found lying unconscious in the street on Princeton Avenue, near 12th Street, about 8 p.m., Lt. Michael Mooney said. Mooney added injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Police responded to the scene on reports of a man down.

Although the victim was dressed in Orthodox Jewish clothing, police are not treating the incident as a bias crime at this point because they have no suspects or motive, Mooney said.
The victim was expected to be transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, the lieutenant added.

A baseball bat was found near the victim, and K-9 units were being used in the search.

A[color="Red"] half-hour before the beating victim was discovered, police said, two juveniles discovered $190,000 worth of checks made out for bank deposit about four blocks away. Police could not say whether the incidents were related.

The children found 11 checks made out to a New York bank at about 7:30 p.m. at Clifton Avenue and 11th Street, Sgt. Joseph Goertz said.

Authorities declined to give the ages of the juveniles but said they told a parent, who then contacted police.
