OAKLAND PARK, Fla. -- A minor car accident led to a deadly shooting in Oakland Park Thursday morning, police said.

According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a shooting at the intersection of Dixie Highway and Northeast 34th Court around 11:20 a.m. When they arrived at the scene, they found the driver of a gold Chrysler 300 on the ground. The man had reportedly been shot following an argument over a very minor crash.

"This was such a minor scratch that a fender-bender would be an exaggeration of what happened," said BSO spokesman Mike Jachles.

Witnesses told detectives they had seen the driver of the Chrysler, later identified as 28-year-old David Haroldo Figueroa, attacking Thomas Warren Thompson, 50, of Ft. Lauderdale.

According to witnesses, the Chrysler rear-ended Figueroa's van. Figueroa then attacked Thompson. Witnesses said Figueroa was pummeling Thompson even as he retreated to his van.

Once he got to his vehicle, Thompson reached for his handgun and shot Figueroa, who later died at the hospital.

Police said Thompson has a permit for the gun he was carrying. He was questioned by police but is not facing criminal charges.

Investigators said the case will be sent to the district attorney for review.
