Standout UConn Grad Drowns

DEEP RIVER - A Stamford man who graduated two months ago from the University of Connecticut with five diplomas drowned early this morning while swimming in a quarry.

Police divers responding to a 911 call recovered the body of Devin Thomas Gaines, 22, of 40 Stillwater Ave., Stamford, in Blakeslee Pond off Bahr Road. The call reporting a drowning came in at 12:51 a.m., state police said.

When Gaines graduated from the University of Connecticut with five majors in May, he was apparently the first student in the school's history to do so. He also graduated with four minors.

He majored in computer science and engineering, theater studies, cognitive science, linguistics / psychology and a self-designed concentration in cinema, culture and cognition.
