Philadelphia police fire more than 100 bullets at armed man

PHILADELPHIA - An armed man who staggered out of his house and began screaming in the street was shot by police officers who fired more than 100 bullets.

He had been screaming at a South Philadelphia intersection and was told to drop his weapon.

The man stumbled out of his home on Taney Street shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday and staggered into a nearby intersection, carrying a gun and screaming, his friends said.

At least 11 calls came over 911, police said. Officers responded, and soon the South Philadelphia neighborhood exploded in gunfire.

When the shooting stopped, the man - identified by neighbors as Steven "Bud" Miller, 30 - lay dead against a utility pole at Tasker and Taney Streets. His body was peppered with what police would only say was "multiple" gunshots.

Police spokesman Capt. Benjamin Naish said officers ordered Miller - whose identity he would not confirm last night - to drop his gun "numerous times." "At one point, he pointed the gun at an officer, and fearing for his safety, the officer fired his weapon," Naish said. …

Neighbors said Miller was out in the street for up to 10 minutes. Latasha Brown said he had been smoking "wet" - usually tobacco or marijuana dipped in embalming fluid - before the incident.

Tyree Bullock, 31, said he wasn't afraid of Miller, a lifetime friend, as he tried to talk sense to him in the street. "He didn't even know his name," Bullock said. Then Bullock saw an officer, gun drawn, approaching, and said: "You're not going to shoot my homey, knowing something's wrong with him - one sock on and disoriented - are you?" …
