It doesn't look like Hong Kong billionaire Cecil Chao should be expecting to walk his daughter down the aisle anytime soon.
The flamboyant 76-year-old shipping magnate — who once claimed to have 10,000 girlfriends — made headlines around the world for offering a $65 million "marriage bounty" to anyone who marries his daughter Gigi. The catch: Gigi is an open lesbian who has been in a relationship for seven years — and they reportedly recently eloped to France.
Gigi seems to be taking the offer, and the publicity, in stride — but that doesn't mean she is ready for this episode to be in the past. The 33-year-old, a Hong Kong socialite herself and an executive at her father's company, took to Facebook to implore her father to pull back the deal.
"For your family's sanity's sake, Daddy please rescind the notice!!!!" she wrote.
Not surprisingly, the publicity surrounding the dowry has led to many potential takers. Cecil Chao told The Associated Press that he's gotten letters from "thousands of people writing to say they want to be my in-laws."
Among the letters coming in, one American suitor for Gigi reportedly wrote: "I'm interested in your offer to wed your daughter, who also happens to be gay. I am a male person, who also happens to be gay." And a Frenchman reportedly wrote: "I'm really serious and [despite the fact] I am a man I think I can make this woman happy. I'm as soft as a woman."
As for Gigi, she seems amazed by how there has been interest around the world, saying on Facebook: "where do all these people come from? Jerusal[e]m? Ethiopia? Istanbul? ridiculous."
However, it seems like her father's offer is not going to divide the family too much. In an interview with The Associated Press, Gigi said they talked on a daily basis and that she is on "very, very loving terms" with him.
Gigi told The Telegraph in London that hundreds of men have contacted her since the offer became public, including some who have attached nude photos of themselves
