KANNAPOLIS — The 26-year-old victim of a sexual assault was taken unconscious to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord Sunday night.
The woman remained unconscious Monday, and her condition was not known Tuesday.
Kannapolis Police Officer Jeremy Page interrupted the attack on the woman Sunday night.
In his report, Page said he was on patrol on Rhode Island Street about 11:55 p.m. Sunday. He turned left onto Coliseum Drive when he immediately saw "two subjects partially in the roadway."
As he approached, he realized the man was performing a sexual act on top of the woman. Page approached and recognized the man from previous incidents.
He pulled the man away and then realized that the woman was unconscious, according to his report.
The woman's pants were pushed down, and Page pulled them back up. The woman's eyes opened briefly but then closed again.
Page called for an ambulance, and an Emergency Medical Service crew took the woman to the hospital.
The man reportedly acknowledged performing several sex acts on the woman. He also told officers he regretted not pulling "the b----" into nearby woods, Page wrote in his report.
Page charged Kenneth Mahatha, 47, streets of Kannapolis, with second-degree sexual offense. He is not charged with first-degree sexual assault because he denied having intercourse with the woman, Lt. Bret Johnson said Tuesday.
