Mel Gibson Slams War In Iraq

LOS ANGELES -- Mel Gibson has slammed the Iraq war while in President George W. Bush's home state to promote his upcoming movie.

Gibson appeared at a film festival in Austin, Texas, to push his nearly finished movie "Apocalypto," which is set in the collapsing Mayan civilization.

Gibson drew parallels between the present-day U.S. and the Mayans.

"The precursors to a civilization that's going under are the same, time and time again," the actor-director said after screening an unfinished cut of "Apocalypto."

He also asked, "What's human sacrifice if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?"

Gibson made the surprise appearance Friday at the Fantastic Fest. He got a standing ovation when he took questions.

Earlier in the week, Gibson screened the film in Oklahoma, but wore a mask so the audience wouldn't recognize him.

In August, an attorney for Gibson entered a no-contest plea on his behalf to a charge of drunken driving in Malibu. He made anti-Semitic remarks to the arresting deputy and later apologized to the Jewish community.
