A newborn baby was in critical condition late Tuesday after his 17-year-old mother was struck by a stray bullet in a drive-by shooting earlier that morning.

The baby boy was delivered after the shooting, but it was unclear whether he was struck by the bullet. Police said the young woman, who was eight months' pregnant, wasn't the target of the shooting.

The mother, identified in police reports as Iesha ("Hasn't Gotta") Husband, was in noncritical condition late Tuesday, Memphis Police Department spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said.

Police were interviewing a suspect in the shooting, but no charges had been filed, Rudolph said.

The shooting may have been preceded by a series of arguments.

A police report points to a July 2 fight between Thomas Mayhew and Charles McDogall. Later that day, Mayhew approached McDogall for "revenge," according to the police report.

Another fight ensued, after which McDogall fled, the report says. Several witnesses then told police that Mayhew, 27, began choking Deandrea Brown, 17.

At that point, Shameka Baldwin, McDogall's aunt, came running outside with a pan of bacon grease. She threw it on Mayhew to stop him from choking Brown. Mayhew was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.

Then, at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Baldwin told police she heard glass breaking in her apartment in the 600 block of Danny Thomas. She went to the door and saw four men throwing Molotov cocktails at her doorway. The men fled, but Baldwin told police she recognized one of them.

A few minutes later, someone in a black vehicle fired shots toward the apartment. One shot crashed through the glass door of an adjacent apartment, striking Husband in the abdomen.

As the men in the vehicle fled, they continued firing toward the apartment, the report says.
