Women abusing men
The numbers show it, domestic violence is up right now partly because of the economy, but police departments are shocked at who's beating whom.
A 911 call, "Send a squad car. My wife is drunk!" Men are panicking. One man called 911 saying, "She put her hands inside of my mouth, scratched the inside of my mouth, scratched the outside of my face and I am still spitting blood." These men are saying their wives or girlfriends attacked them. Another 911 call. This time the operator says, "Has this ever happened before?" A caller says, "Ya, but I have never called police."
Very few men call police on these women, but when they do many women get charged with domestic violence and battery. Terry Owen with the Port St. Lucie Police Department, says, "We have always seen the men as the abusers, but that is not the case now." Owen says in April, 28 woman were arrested for domestic violence. Owen says, "Woman are just more aggressive than they used to be, they are not laid back or passive." She says that coupled with the poor economy and the higher use of alcohol and drugs is pushing women over the edge. This is another 911 call, "Me and my boyfriend just got in to it and I am trying to get my stuff to leave and he won't let me get my stuff and I don't have time to argue with him." That was Lakeshia Tumblin. She was just arrested for throwing a knife at her boyfriend. The crimes continue and rarely do men report it, "It gets dismissed as I can handle it, cause men are physically stronger and able to handle the abuse more than woman are," says Terry Owen. Jill Borowicz of Safe Space says they provide help for those abused. She says very few men are coming through the door, "Last year we helped five men." But both the police department and Safe Space encourage victims to come forward.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department says rarely do the battery charges stick. Most of the time the man drops the charges, but if there is enough evidence the State Attorney's office can go after the women.
