Merrill Lynch Ends Talks to Move Headquarters to Ground Zero
By David M. Levitt
July 17 (Bloomberg) -- Merrill Lynch & Co. has broken off talks with Silverstein Properties Inc. about relocating its headquarters to a new skyscraper under construction at the World Trade Center site.
Silverstein issued a statement today acknowledging the decision and said it's working to resolve the design and construction issues at the site. Janno Lieber, president of World Trade Center Properties, an affiliate of Silverstein, said the firm hopes Merrill decides to ``keep their headquarters in Lower Manhattan, their historic home, for many years.''
The loss of Merrill is another setback for the Ground Zero project which has been beset by construction and planning delays and infighting among state and city officials, developers and community activists. A commitment from Merrill could have helped attract other tenants to the 16-acre site, where rebuilding has been slow in the six years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
