Border Patrol agent shoots migrant in El Paso tunnel
By ALICIA A. CALDWELL Associated Press Writer -- Associated Press
EL PASO, Texas — A Border Patrol agent shot and wounded a migrant who was crossing illegally into the U.S. through a drainage tunnel early Tuesday, the U.S. Border Patrol said.
The agent, who was not identified, responded with his partner after a motion sensor was tripped and a group of migrants was spotted going into the tunnel, Border Patrol spokesman Doug Mosier said.
The two agents encountered a group of (nine illegals) … in the tunnel around 12:30 a.m. One of the agents fired a shot after a migrant made a motion toward him, Mosier said.
The bullet stuck the migrant in the left arm, Mosier said, and he was taken to a hospital where he had surgery to remove the bullet and was expected to be sent back to Mexico after being released from the hospital, Mosier said.
The Mexican Consulate was notified about the incident. El Paso Police, the Border Patrol Sector Evidence Team, and the FBI will conduct separate investigations into the cause of the shooting, Mosier said.
The uninjured migrants will be processed and returned (scot-free) to Mexico. …
Tuesday's shooting was the second of an illegal immigrant in less than a week by the El Paso Border Patrol. On June 27, an unnamed agent fired at least one shot at a man believed to be a human smuggler after the agent was hit in the head with a rock.
Officials said the agent was trying to help another illegal immigrant who had fallen into a border canal when the suspected human smuggler attacked him. The drowning victim's body was later recovered a few miles from where the Border Patrol agent first tried to pull him from the water. …

Border Patrol shooting becomes contentious issue
07/05/2007 06:12:26 PM MDT
Immigrants' advocates and some residents of the Segundo Barrio said today they are concerned for their safety and doubt the (Border patrol agent’s) self-defense stand.
"We are not convinced that the argument that they (the two agents) were defending themselves is a good argument," said Fernando Garcia, executive director of the Border Network for Human Rights, at a press conference today.
"We believe this was not an isolated event…”
At the same time, assaults against Border Patrol agents have increased to 59 so far this year from 45 at the same time last year, according to Border Patrol statistics.
Segundo Barrio residents who saw the aftermath of Tuesday's shooting have described to their neighbors seeing the wounded migrant halfway out of the manhole, leading some residents to think -- erroneously -- that the shooting took place above ground. …
"There's fear and distrust in the community," she said. "One of the residents could be mistaken for an undocumented (immigrant) and shot. It's not safe for us."
About 300 families from the El Paso area and in Southern New Mexico have signed a petition circulated by the Border Network asking for a thorough investigation and a review of Border Patrol lethal force protocols, Border Network officials said. The group is also organizing a protest scheduled July 28, officials said.

Border community petitions investigation of shootings
July 6, 2007 12:58 AM EDT
Border Patrol Spokesman Patrick Berry stated (in response to complains from Mexican activists):
"There has been an increase in assaults against Border Patrol agents and many confrontations in the El Paso area have involved rocking assaults against agents. A rock is a deadly weapon and agents have been seriously injured in the past. Border Patrol agents are trained to defend themselves or an innocent third party utilizing the minimum amount of force necessary. All shooting incidents are reviewed by the appropriate agencies. Last week, the issue of increasing assaults on agents was discussed with authorities from Mexico. The recent incident where an agent was injured by a rock while attempting to rescue a drowning man illustrates the level of violence our agents face daily."

The Mexicans are organizing just like Blacks have organized. And they will be even more effective in getting their way. Mexicans – with the help of White politicians – will hamstring the Border Patrol and all other police forces within the U.S., and prevent officers from enforcing the law.
