PHOENIX -- An East Valley man has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse after witnesses said he put his 1-year-old in a clothes dryer, police said.
Police said they were called to a home in Mesa on Wednesday night after a report of domestic violence. When police arrived, witnesses at the home told police they saw Jose Rocha, 19, of Mesa, put his 1-year-old son into a clothes dryer and turn the machine on, police said.
Police said witnesses told them the infant was playing in the dryer and the family thought it was cute. When the child's mother left the room to retrieve a camera, Rocha turned the dryer on with the child inside, they said.
"My daughter went in there (to get a camera). She thought it was gonna be cute; the baby crawled in the dryer," said Glenda Danison, the baby's grandmother. "And then, all of a sudden, we heard the baby screaming."
Rocha was no longer at the home by the time police arrived on the scene.
Rocha returned home just after midnight and was arrested early Thursday morning, police said.
The child suffered bruising on his back and was treated and released, police said.
Police records indicate Rocha denied turning on the dryer, saying he was spinning it while holding onto the child inside.
Danison believes Rocha has an anger problem.
"I've heard him a few times yelling at my grandson, but I've never seen him hitting," she said.
Danison said Rocha has lived with her on and off for the past few years, but now she wants him out.
"I would not want him ever to come back to my house. I want my grandson to be safe," she said.
