Mexican Violence 'Rumors' Roil School

Fast-spreading rumors of students bringing weapons to school prompted Conroe Independent School District officials to beef up security at Peet Junior High School Thursday.

The rumors, which included talk of a student walkout to protest proposed federal immigration measures, proved to be false, officials said.

Nevertheless, random students were selected to go through metal detectors at the school Thursday. Extra CISD police officers and administrators were also on hand to add "extra eyes and ears" to the situation, according to spokeswoman Kay Galindo... The rumors were so rampant Wednesday that Principal Lloyd Swanson sent a letter home with students.

"Information was reported to school administrators this morning regarding students possibly bringing weapons to school on Thursday," the letter stated. "After a thorough investigation by the Peet JHS administration and CISD Police, this information has been found to be an unsubstantiated rumor.

"Because we take all reports involving students' safety seriously, we will continue to investigate any leads and be vigilant in watching for any concerns."

Swanson concluded the letter by asking parents with questions or information about safety concerns to call the school or the CISD KIDCHAT anonymous tip line...One mother of a Peet student wasn't sure how to feel about the letter, which she did not see until Thursday morning...The women's daughter, an eighth grader, told The Courier that she heard Hispanic students had threatened other students.
"This was kind of shocking," she said. "What did we ever do to them?"

According to the school board's site, Peet is 64.2% White, 25.0% "Hispanic" and 9.2% Black. While these figures are better than many schools in Texas and elsewhere, they provide just enough White kids to prevent them from being swamped by the non-Whites, but is also a large enough White population to gain the "special attention" of officials, lest any insidious White racial indentity is manifested.
