The climax of Quantrill's guerilla career came on August 21, 1863, when he led a force of 450 raiders into Lawrence, Kansas, a stronghold of pro-Union support and the home of Senator James H. Lane, whose leading role in the struggle for free-soil in Kansas had made him a public enemy to pro-slavery forces in Missouri. Lane managed to escape, racing through a cornfield in his nightshirt, but Quantrill and his men killed 183 men and boys, dragging some from their homes to murder them in front of their families, and set the torch to much of the city.

The Lawrence Massacre led to swift retribution, as Union troops forced the residents of four Missouri border counties onto the open prairie while Jayhawkers looted and burned everything they left behind. Quantrill and his raiders took part in the Confederate retaliation for this atrocity, but when Union forces drove the Confederates back, Quantrill fled to Texas. His guerrilla band broke up into several smaller units, including one headed by his vicious lieutenant, "Bloody Bill" Anderson, known for wearing a necklace of Yankee scalps into battle. ([color="Blue"]this is classic scythian!) Quantrill himself was eventually killed on a raid into Kentucky in 1865.

Enjoy your indignation, 6 June 2002 -- A soapy, simplistic sermon soused in syrupy music, this "Hater of the week" TV movie has a mom menaced by bigots as a change from mysterious non-disfiguring diseases, but the emotional pull is the same.

A collection of impeccably nice folks is suddenly surrounded by a bunch of -- who? Aliens resembling Montana residents? Pod people, body snatchers? It's all based on real incidents in Billings in 1993, though the community campaign which squashed the outbreak was called "Not in Our Town".

The motivation of the haters is hardly explored, though their bigoted rhetoric is aired at some length. They're not KKK, or at any rate not a sheet is in sight. Begley is quite an articulate and shrewd tactician -- blond like a neo-Nazi ought to be -- but his son is a mouthfoamer and the rest a posse of ductile Neanderthals.

The objects of their persecution include a Jewish doctor ministering to Native Americans, devout black church people, and a dear old lady who survived the Holocaust. So the audience isn't exactly taxed with a delicate moral dilemma in working out whom they're meant to be rooting for. But generating warm glows of complacency between the ad breaks is what this genre's about. Kathy Baker does a lot of wide-eyed dawning horror and righteous wrath as the mom. [Glenn explained on the air how he gets irate "soccor moms" who call and scream at him. --L.D]

One odd aesthetic choice is the use of Handel's aria "Zadok the Priest", written for the coronation of King George II of England, on the soundtrack. The screenplay's rhetorical high point is the repetition of the old sob story about the King of Denmark offering to wear a yellow star if Jews in his Nazi-occupied country were forced to do so. He never said any such thing, and Danish Jews were permitted to escape in one night by boats to Sweden with the connivance of the Reich Protector--but that sort of complexity is more than the boob-tube booboisie could handle. What would it take for Hollywood to make a TVM about the avalanche of violent black-on-white crimes, such as the Zebra killings?
