Report: Elderly white males have top suicide rate

Elderly white males are more likely to kill themselves than any other group, a new Population Reference Bureau report reveals.

While suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, with 11 suicide deaths per 100,000 Americans, Caucasian men over the age of 65 commit suicide at almost triple that overall rate, the report said.

This group is also more than eight times as likely to kill themselves as women of the same age and has twice the suicide rate of all of their male contemporaries.

And their risk increases as they get older. White men 85 and above have the highest annual suicide rate compared with others, at 51.4 deaths per 100,000, the report said.

Common medical knowledge

Local doctors and suicide experts said it's hard to pinpoint exactly why there is a high suicide rate among older white males, a phenomenon they said is common knowledge in the medical field.

Some researchers assert that many older white males are more likely to keep to themselves and lack the resilience and coping mechanisms honed among women and other ethnic groups.

Men, socialized to be in control, can succumb to depression as they age and can easily kill themselves if they don't have someone around to stop them, researchers said.

At Rush University Medical Center, doctors recently received a $277,000 grant from the Retirement Research Foundation for a program that allows primary care physicians to work closely with social workers, psychiatrists and psychologists to "comprehensively" treat older people who might be clinically depressed, Rush geriatric psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Loiterstein said.

'Mentally not himself'

Vicki Panke is still uncertain whether her CEO father was depressed when he killed himself in his Rebco Machine Specialties offices in Westmont in 1994. Richard Busse was a happily married father of three and grandfather of seven when he died. The 62-year-old had a few side business "failures," but if anything was bothering him, his family certainly didn't know, Panke, 53, of St. Charles, said.

"We often say had he known the pain this would have caused his family, he would never do it. Sometimes, we say he was mentally not himself when he did this," Panke said. "Someone of his generation, his ethnicity, was never taught the skills of sharing his feelings with anyone."

The truth is all male mammals have an instinct for social hierarchy, with men on top, and everything about our "society" is twisted to undermine white male social position. If they are freaked out, that would be why.

I would guess it's not such a mystery and that men who commit suicide do so because they have cancer or something and they don't want another operation or they are looking at the old folks home. Men who were never decent family men are probably more likely to commit suicide, too, if they end up alone and sickly.

Also, women often feel they have to stick around for a child or grandchild, which gives them a reason to live.

It is an old man's right to kill himself if he so wishes. It is an option which sure as hell beats the vegetative or being strapped to the gurney with some underpaid nignog waking you up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom.

I remember reading asians pwn themselves the most, followed by whites and blacks.
