Taxi Driver Only Had License for Five Weeks

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The 21-year-old driver of a taxicab that slammed into a building in lower Manhattan, killing a 20-year-old college student and injuring four other young women, had just received his hack's license five weeks ago.

Hassan Afzal, of Queens, got his cabbie's license in May and leased his taxi from Yellow Cab SLS Jet in Queens, according to Taxi and Limousine Commission spokesman Allen Fromberg.

The driver, whose condition was upgraded to stable at Bellevue Hospital, got his state driver's license in 2004, Fromberg said.

Afzal lost control of his cab on the West Side Highway early Sunday, swerved across the roadway and slammed into a building, police said.

One of his passengers, Danielle Ricco, was thrown from the speeding taxi and killed, relatives and police said.

Ricco had just finished her sophomore year at Pace University, where she was a hospitality management major. Her father, Richard Ricco, said Danielle was about to start an internship at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., later this summer. She had hoped it would lead to her dream job: a career with the Walt Disney Company.

``To see her cheated out of her future hurts so badly,'' Richard Ricco said. She took taxis at night because she believed it was safer, he said.

A 21-year-old woman was hospitalized in critical condition after the crash, police and relatives said. Another 20-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl were in stable condition.

Relatives said the young women described having a disagreement with the cabbie immediately before the crash.

Francesca Sallustio, the mother of two of the young women, claimed that Danielle had asked the driver to lower his loud music, and he refused and began speeding.

Police said the driver had not been charged, and the accident remained under investigation.
