SPENCER — Police arrested a North Rowan Middle School teacher Tuesday on two felony charges of taking indecent liberties with a pupil.
Isaiah Dewitt Oglesby, 25, Granite Quarry, turned himself in Tuesday morning, four days after police issued the warrants for his arrest.
He faces a charge of unlawfully, willfully and feloniously taking and attempting to take immoral, improper and indecent liberties with a student younger than 16 for the purpose of arousal and gratifying sexual desire.
Police also charged Oglesby with unlawfully, willfully and feloniously taking indecent liberties with a juvenile.
The incident allegedly occurred in school Feb. 22 and involved Oglesby and a 13- or 14-year-old female pupil, said Sgt. Eric Stillwell of the Spencer Police Department.
Stillwell said he did not know the girl's exact age and did not know any other details about the incident.
Police Chief Robert Bennett said Friday he could not release information beyond what was on the warrants because Officer Greg Hannold was still investigating. Bennett was in police training Tuesday and was not available for comment.
Oglesby, who teaches exceptional children at North Rowan Middle, has been suspended with pay since Feb. 24, when the Rowan-Salisbury School System began its own investigation, said Dawn Creason, the system's public information director.
Creason said she was not able to release any additional details.
North Rowan Middle School Principal Vicki Booker said Monday that she could not comment on the situation, except to say that Oglesby teaches exceptional children and that he was working at North when the incident occurred.
Oglesby did not return phone calls Tuesday.
According to reports from the Rowan County Magistrates' Office, Oglesby posted his $10,000 bond Tuesday.
