The starting quarterback of Glassboro's championship high school football team has been indicted on a number of charges stemming from an alleged gang rape in April, officials said Wednesday.
Justin Breaker, 19, of Pittsgrove, Salem County, faces charges of first degree aggravated sexual assault, second degree sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact and criminal restraint, said First Assistant Salem County Prosecutor William Brennan.
Details of the alleged incident were not being released, Brennan said, because a juvenile was involved. Conviction on the most serious charge of aggravated sexual assault carries a possible prison sentence of up to 20 years.
Two others were charged in the incident and one -- a juvenile -- has pleaded guilty, Brennan said. He would not say why it took almost eight months for an indictment to be handed up in the case or whether Breaker and the others charged were in jail or free on bail.
On Saturday, Breaker -- listed at 6 feet 1 inch and 185 pounds -- led Glassboro High School to a South Jersey Group 1 championship over Paulsboro.
The quarterback played his freshman season at Glassboro before transferring to Shalick High School in Pittsgrove for his sophomore and junior seasons. He returned to Glassboro this year and was profiled in a Courier-Post article after throwing for nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns during a 34-7 win over Gloucester City on Oct. 13.
"You got to love your life," he said at the time. "You only have one life to live."
Bob Baly, assistant director for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association -- the governing body for high school athletics -- said his office was not aware of the indictment. Baly also said the association does not have rules for disciplining a player for off-the-field incidents, unless that player is convicted of a crime.
"That's a position that school boards have policies on," he said. "We respect the school boards."
Numerous calls were left with Glassboro's athletic director and football coach Wednesday. None were returned.
Brennan said he did not know who Breaker's attorney is.
