Springfield restaurant shootout kills man

SPRINGFIELD - Gunfire ripped through a crowded fast-food restaurant early yesterday, killing one patron, wounding five others and scattering New Year's revelers in the downtown nightclub district.

Kameen Hallett, 18, of 37 Windsor St., was pronounced dead at Baystate Medical Center after being shot at Kennedy Fried Chicken about 2:15 a.m., police said. Aaron Ramsey, 26, of 179 Bay St., and Kenneth Hawkins, 25, of 157 Florence St., who were wounded, were charged and are expected to be arraigned today, said Jennifer Flagg, chief of staff for Police Commissioner Edward A. Flynn.

About 50 patrons were inside the 1673 Main St. restaurant when several people pulled out guns and began to fire at each other over a "perceived slight" involving a spilled drink, she said.
