A pimp who turned a straight-A high school student into a high-priced call girl has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Josh Mfizi, 27, stared at the young woman, whom he befriended and exploited, as he was led away in handcuffs today. He has never expressed any remorse for his actions.

"He engaged in procuring a minor to become a prostitute and lived in part on the avails of her prostitution using violence and intimidation," said Superior Court Justice Julie Thorburn.

The victim, who was 17 when she first met Mfizi, was accompanied in court by family members. One young woman applauded when the judge said Mfizi will be placed on the national sex offender registry for 20 years.

"The effect on the complainant and her family has been terrible," said the judge.

The sentence, which will be reduced by two years for pre-trial custody, was at the top of the range and was what prosecutor Christine Jenkins requested. Defence lawyer Michael Webster, who alleged the victim was a willing participant in prostituting herself, asked for six years.

Last month a jury convicted the father of one boy on nine counts, including assault with a weapon and procuring a person under 18 for prostitution using threats or coercion. The latter crime carries a minimum five-year sentence.

The victim testified that she met Mfizi in February 2007 during her first visit to an after-hours club.

They made love that night and she became infatuated with him. They used cocaine and visited nightclubs and she soon moved in with him.

Mfizi showed her a website operated by an escort service, and told her about the thousands of dollars his ex-girlfriends had made having fun doing such work, assuring her she wouldn't have to have sex. That was not the case.

She estimated she made $5,000 over three to four weeks before police arrested her, and that Mfizi kept 90 per cent.

The victim had previously lived with her parents, both Toronto professionals, but was fighting with them over her staying out late and going to parties when she met the accused, the judge said.
