WASHINGTON - A civil rights lawsuit will reportedly be filed against the Metropolitan Police Department and the city in the death of 14-year-old DeOnte Rawlings.
Rawlings was shot and killed by an off-duty D.C. Police officer last month.
Rawlings family attorney Greg Lattimer will ask for $100-million, claiming the boy had no gun and several disputes occurred before the shooting.
Police have said that officer James Haskel and another officer -- both off-duty and out of uniform -- were looking for a mini bike that was stolen from Haskel's home. Police say the officers saw Rawlings riding the stolen mini bike and that Rawlings fired at them when they confronted him.
Police say Haskel returned fire, hitting the teen. But police have not recovered the gun that he allegedly used, and the boy's family has questioned the police account.
An autopsy shows that Rawlings was shot in the back of the head.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier tells The Washington Post that both officers involved have had a "stellar history" during their two decades on the force. Lanier says both officers have been hard workers without disciplinary problems.
A federal investigation into the incident could take six months.
