Authorities investigate boy's death as possible hate crime

The Pinal County Sheriff's office is investigating the tragic death of a nine-year-old boy.

The victim's family says there are many unanswered questions surrounding Malik Thomas's death, and want to know if he was the target of a possible hate crime.

Malik died Monday at a Phoenix hospital from what doctors say were severe burns to his body.

Officials say Malik suffered those burns on Mother's Day at a construction site in Arizona City.

That's just south of Casa Grande.

According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, Malik and two other kids were playing with a flammable liquid when the young boy was burned.

Funeral services for the boy were held in Coolidge Saturday morning.

"We are out here to try and ascertain what really happened."

[highlight]Art Mobley, a spokesperson for Malik's family, believes the young boy's death was no accident.

"What we have learned from the family though is that this incident was an attack and it is essentially was one that we certainly feel threatened by as a community."[/highlight]

According to Pinal County Sheriff's Officials, Malik was with two other boys, around the ages of 9 and 10.

Mike Minter, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, says the boys stumbled upon a plastic container with a flammable liquid.

"They were kicking this milk container with the flammable liquid around in a room, in the building that was being built. Later on, they decided to strike matches."

That's when Malik was seriously injured.

"There was a bunch of fumes, highly ignitable fumes from the flammable liquid in the room. There was an explosion, basically a fireball and it burned Malik pretty bad."

[highlight]Sabinus Megwa is the attorney representing the young boy's family.

"Given the facts as we know, I believe that law enforcement should investigate this both as a possible hate crime and as a possible homicide."

Minter says, "Approximately about a week ago we understood there was an e-mail going out that this was racially motivated. In our investigation we are definitely looking into that as a possibility." [/highlight]

Spokesperson for the family? When I first read about this story a few days ago, the grandparents, who had custody of the kid were saying this was NOT a hate crime. And that the idea was basically ridiculous. It was only his mother who was saying something different.

Maupin says the boy's grandfather told him Malik said he was burned on purpose.

strange. they must all be wanting some cash, now. If the kid told him this was done on purpose, why would he say something different in the beginning?

News 4 had an exclusive interview with the boy's primary guardians, his grandparents.

They say that the other boys in this case, also about 9-years old, were his best friends.

They believe it was an accident

Alice Banks says, "I don't believe it was racially motivated when he played with the boys every day."

Robert Banks agrees. He says, "We don't feel this is right to make statements like this."

Strange how quickly everything changes when the lawyers get their claws into you.
