Governor Jerry Brown put the breaks on school bus services throughout California Tuesday, potentially leaving thousands of school children out in the cold and without a way to get to and from school.
The $248 million “trigger-cut” – which will be instituted on January 1, 2012 – was only a piece of the nearly $1 billion that Brown wiped off the California budget books. “This is not the way we like to run California, but we have to live within our means,” said Brown during his press conference.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Unified School District plans to file suit in order to stop the state from taking the much-needed funds. On Tuesday, Superintendent John Deasy stated that the cuts would leave 35,000 students and 13,000 special needs students in the district without a way to get to school.
The purge to school bus funding could have a dramatic impact to the budget of school districts – which also received a roughly $80 million cut – throughout the state.
School districts will still have the opportunity to maintain bus services. However, those funds will have to be paid out of their already shrinking pockets –meaning that funds will have to come from other aspects of the education budget, potentially costing jobs .
