This was my theory. Coupling that with Christianity and she's going to offend them just by her existence. She stands as an, admittedly flaunting, contradiction of their beliefs and values. Moreover, that contradiction has actually helped lead her somewhere successful. She's not the best, but she's fared better than most. That's a black eye to them.
Abstinence has long been the counter argument on the issue of abortion, which the NYT is known to herald. Whether or not she even actively preaches absence as the better method, she still acts as a walking, talking, successful billboard to abstinence. They don't like that.
