WASHINGTO -- President Obama appointed a Jewish preservation advocate to the Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad.

Emil Fish, a Holocaust survivor, is the Founder and President of the Bardejob Jewish Preservation Committee, which works to preserve and create a memorial to the Jewish Suburbia in Bardejov, Slovakia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Commission is an independent agency charged with identifying and reporting cemeteries, monuments, and historic buildings in Eastern and Central Europe that are associated with the heritage of U.S. citizens.

According to the Commission's website, "the Holocaust and 45 years of atheistic, Communist governments created a critical need that led to the Commission’s establishment."
