US President Barack Obama on Wednesday nominated Janet Yellen to head the Federal Reserve, calling her a proven leader and "exceptionally well qualified for this job."

Yellen is Jewish[6] and is married to George Akerlof, a Nobel prize-winning economist and professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. Her son Robert Akerlof is an assistant professor at the University of Warwick.[7]
