Man Shot To Death On Way To Church In KCK
May 8, 2008

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A 38-year-old man was shot to death while on his way to church Wednesday evening, a friend said.

Police said [color="Red"]Everett Suits was shot outside his apartment building in the 3700 block of Booth Avenue.

A friend said she saw the shooting happen in the parking lot. She said the shooter first approached her and tried to get inside a secure building, but she refused.

She said the shooter than approached her friend and made demands.

"Gunman said, 'Give me some money or get me something.' He tried to grab Everett's briefcase. He was a strong guy -- he would've beat the hell out of him, if he hadn't shot him," she told KMBC's Chris Nagus. "(Suits) was on his way to church -- he wasn't trying to fight or die or whatever."

KMBC's Bev Chapman reported that Suits had his own construction company doing custom concrete work.

Friends said he may have been killed by a man who used to work for him.

Suits leaves behind three children.

Friends said Suits had an arrest record, but that he had turned his life around and was planning a future.

"He said, 'I'm going to go to church tonight, really going to get it together, get my priorities straight.' He was on the right path, but very, very sad," said the Rev. Sammy Sampson with Glory Barn Faith Temple.

Sampson said she has known Suits for years. His funeral will be held at her temple.

"We will celebrate his life and all of the good things. The fact he loved his family, loved his children," Sampson said.

On Thursday, police announced that they took a person into custody. Charges are pending.
