LAKEWOOD — The local branch of the NAACP is claiming race was a motivating factor in an altercation between a 15-year-old black youth and a 43-year-old Orthodox Jewish man that took place last week.

In a statement released yesterday, Warren Sherard, president of the Ocean County-Lakewood branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, called for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and federal prosecutors to take over the investigation of the incident that occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on May 17.

"I have met with the victim and it is clear to me that the impetus for this crime was, at least in part, the child's race," Sherard said in the statement.

The NAACP claims the boy cut through a public alley way along Lawrence Avenue while on his way to play basketball with friends at the Lakewood Community Center. The group alleges he was then confronted by Elchonon Zimmerman, a Lawrence Avenue homeowner.

"He (Zimmerman) told him he couldn't take the path and tried to take his picture with a cell phone," Sherard said. "The kid tried to block him from taking the picture and he (Zimmerman) punched him."

Sherard said the incident escalated as neighbors in the heavily Orthodox neighborhood arrived on the scene.

"As other people came out to see what was going on, the man instructed others to help him subdue the boy," he said.

Sherard said members of the crowd used racial slurs and kept the youth pinned to the ground, "with his face down in the dirt."

"It was a pretty scary incident," he said.

Sherard's claims were refuted by Joe Atlas, spokesman for the Lakewood Vaad, a Jewish community service organization.
Atlas said Zimmerman, a teacher at Lakewood's Cheder School who has been charged with simple assault by police, was merely protecting his private property when he was attacked by the youth.
"The pathway was made in between people's backyards and is private property," Atlas said. "If you saw someone cutting through your backyard, don't you have a right to ask them to leave?"

Atlas said it was Zimmerman who called police to report the trespassing and attempted to take the cell phone picture to provide authorities with a picture of the individual. He claims that "the teenager punched him."

"It's the teenager who should be charged," Atlas said. "He was on private property and he didn't belong there and all charges should be dropped against Zimmerman and he should be vindicated."

Sherard said the issue has become representative of a common problem of social inequity in town.

"If you've been in Lakewood more than a half hour, you know that the Orthodox community is a powerful one," he said. "The community I am a part of is not rich or powerful and we're concerned this is going to get swept under the rug."

Sherard called for the arrest of others who he said played a role in the altercation.

"It is our position that everyone that put their hand on this child or yelled racial slurs at home while he was being assaulted is part of the alleged crime. We will not be satisfied with the arrest of one lone participant," he said.

In the statement, Sherard asserted that there had been witness-tampering in the case and said any further investigation should be conducted by agencies outside the township police department.

Sherard said the call for outside investigators is not, however, a condemnation of the department.

"The Lakewood Police Department is a very professional organization but the circumstances surrounding this case are sensitive enough to warrant some outside help," he said. "This is not a question of not trusting the Lakewood Police Department. It is a question of trust but verify."

Sherard said he went to the department with concerns that race played a role in the altercation but was unhappy with the result.

"The indication I got from the Lakewood Police is that they didn't feel it was a bias crime," he said.

No member of the township police department willing to comment on the issue could be reached last night, but Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Martin J. Anton said his office is aware of the NAACP's claims and is looking into the matter.

"We always review bias reports and we will continue to follow this," he said.

Anton said it is standard procedure to allow local law enforcement agencies to conduct their own investigation before the prosecutor's office launches its own.

Dickerson said he was on his way to a friend's house when Elchonon Zimmerman, who lives on Lawrence Avenue, told him he was on private property and then tried to take the youth's picture with his cell phone camera.

A scuffle ensued and when a patrolman arrived, he found Zimmerman kneeling on the youth's back, police have said.

I highly doubt he is telling the whole truth. Young black males are often not in non-black neighborhoods for innocent purposes. That reality does not automatically change because he got beat up by some kikes.

The kike rabbi got away with a slap on the wrist. He recived like a $150 fine in municipal court for a traffic infraction, not any kind of assault charge. The cop in question basically had his career ruined, the message being very clear that even if well deserved, if you arrest a hasidic jew in lakewood, they will land on you with both feet.

There have been other situations as well, the cases that come to mind the most have been three different times one of them left the little kike in the car and they roasted to death on a hot day. Never heard of any of them getting sentenced for endangering the welfare of a child, never even heard of Dyfus taking away the rest of their kids.

But the most telling story was one from several years ago. One of them got charges with wreckless driving. At his couert appearance several hundred of them showed up. It winded up with the defendant telling the Judge that he would have the judge cleaning toilets for a living. How the fuck do you tell a judge that in a court proceeding, without getting a contempt of court charge is beyong me.

Unfortunately, kikes are a very unified force. In Lakewood, they mow down whoever gets in their way. Even the Police can't exercise any power over them. I'm surprised they charged the jew with a crime.

Man, 43, charged in assault of boy

LAKEWOOD: Police here have charged a 43-year-old man with simple assault of a minor.

Sgt. John Stillwell said the incident started a few minutes past 8 p.m. Monday, when a 15-year-old boy was walking across a path in the 300 block of Lawrence Avenue. Stillwell said he did not know if the path was on private property.

However, the boy was soon surrounded by a group of men and when Patrolman Jonathan Pederson arrived, he found Elchonon Zimmerman of Lawrence Avenue kneeling on the boy's back, Stillwell said.

The boy was taken to Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood for undisclosed injuries. Zimmerman was charged with simple assault and given a summons, Stillwell said.
