Suspect wanted in Oildale hate crime

BAKERSFIELD - Kern County Sheriff's deputies have arrested one suspect involved in a hate crime in Oildale, but a second suspect remains on the loose.
It was the second time in three years that Ronda Walker says she was targeted in Oildale for being black.

Walker says early Thursday morning, several young men came to her house not once, but twice and vandalized it. In fact, remnants of broken glass still cover the ground and the chair walker says was used to break her two front windows is still on the porch.

Walker said she wasn't surprised by the actions of the Oildale street gang

known as the Peckerwoods. Although, she said she’s had enough.

She said she's put up with the slurs for three years...

“I'm trying to relocate as we speak because I can't stay there,” she said.

Walker moved to the home on Decatur Street in 2003 knowing what she was getting into. She said immediately after she moved into the neighborhood, her house was vandalized with racial slurs.

But on Thursday, Walker said it was the first time she felt her life was in danger.

“I was terrified because I didn't know what they were going to do and they came in there with guns,” said Walker. “I didn't know if they were going to do anything to me and my daughter.

“This incident is the scariest thing that ever happened to me since I’ve been in Oildale,” she adds.

Several neighbors came to Walker's aid, but one of them was stabbed twice while protecting her. His friend says they've seen this gang before, and they'll likely see them again.

Investigators are still looking for a white man in his 20's described as 5-foot-9, about 130 pounds, with a bald head and blue eyes.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the sheriff's department at 861-3110.

Meanwhile, a 14-year-old white male has been arrested and booked into Juvenile Hall. He faces charges of vandalism, conspiracy, and committing a hate crime.
