Philadelphia Mayor Officiating Israeli Diplomat's Same-Sex Wedding

A top Israeli diplomat will say 'I Do' to his fiance before Philadelphia's mayor on Thursday.

Elad Strohmayer, Deputy Consul of Israel to the Mid-Atlantic Region, will marry Oren Ben-Yosef at a ceremony in Philadelphia City Hall officiated by Mayor Michael Nutter and Delaware Rabbi Michael Beals.

“It is only appropriate that our marriage takes place in the beautiful structure that houses the seat of government of the City of Brotherly Love, that has come to be a second home since my appointment to the Consulate in 2012,” said Strohmayer in a statement.

Both men are Israeli citizens and live in Philadelphia. The city is home to one of eight Consulate Generals in the United States.

Family, friends, LGBT leaders and Israeli Consul General, Yaron Sideman, are expected to attend the afternoon service.

This will be the first diplomat Nutter will wed in his time leading the city. Nutter has performed between 15 and 20 same-sex marriages since it became legal in Pennsylvania in May 2014, his press secretary tells NBC10.
