Store Protestors Believe KKK Behind Racist Flyers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A disturbing message was sent Monday to people protesting an Eastlake store.

Flyers with a racial slur and a picture printed on them were tossed at the group Monday morning. Protesters have been trying to discourage people from shopping at a convenience store, accusing the owner of abusing patrons.

The flyers were pitched a day before a public hearing was scheduled to be held at Birmingham City Hall to decide if the business owner should keep his license. They depict of O.J. Simpson hanging from the back of a tow truck. At the top is a written description of the homemade gallows which includes a racist expletive.

Jacqueline Holmes was one of only two or three protestors standing on Oporto-Madrid Boulevard at Fifth Avenue North when a man tossed the flyers at her feet.

“It was heartbreaking; it was sad. I was so scared,” she said.

He also delivered a message.

“He said we have to go. We didn’t say anything. We didn’t realize what the flyers said until we started picking them up. By then, he had already sped down the street,” she said.

Holmes did not get a good look at the man or the car he was in. Meanwhile, another protestor, Latasha Perdue, called Birmingham’s police chief and asked her to increase patrols.

“We need more security, because they’re going to try everything and anything to break this up and we’re not going anywhere,” said Perdue.

After the incident, several police officers watched over protestors throughout the afternoon. The group can only speculate at who may be responsible for the flyers. There is a phone number on the flyers, but when NBC13 called it, the owner of a salvage yard in Illinois answered and said, “We are not involved in that kind of stuff.”

Protestors said they suspect the Ku Klux Klan is behind the incident, but they said it all happened so quickly, they aren’t exactly sure how. The two men involved had their faces covered, but one protestor said that she thought one of the men was indeed wearing a white sheet.
