Colin Powell says "another version of the Republican Party," is emerging warning that the likes of Dick Cheney might not have a place in the refurbished doctrine.

TheFormer US secretary of states' warning came on Wednesday in reaction to alleged depreciative remarks from the former vice president and Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh during which they had discounted Powell from the Grand Old Party.

talk show host Limbaugh had urged Powell "to become a Democrat, instead of claiming to be a Republican interested in reforming the Republican Party" earning approval from Cheney who acknowledged "I think my take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn't know he was still a Republican," CBS News reported.

"What Colin Powell needs to do is close the loop and become a Democrat, instead of claiming to be a Republican interested in reforming the Republican Party," Limbaugh said on his show. Cheney seconded the comment, saying "I think my take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn't know he was still a Republican."

"I may be out of their version of the Republican Party, but there's another version of the Republican Party waiting to emerge once again," Powell responded in his address to a Boston audience.

Powell is said to have attracted much of the hostility over his endorsement of President Barack Obama.
