A Menifee man accused of being a white supremacist gang member testified Wednesday that he has no ties to the group but shares their views.

"I don't like gangs, period," Howard Michael Marshall testified during his trial. "It's wrong."

Marshall said his views on race changed when he was serving a prison term.

"I believe that if you are white you should stay with white (people), period," Marshall testified.

Marshall, 45, is on trial for charges including attempted murder and drug and weapons possession to benefit a white supremacist gang. If convicted of all charges, Marshall faces life in prison, Deputy District Attorney Quinn Baranski said.

He also is suspected of trying to recruit teenagers into the gang. Marshall volunteered as an assistant football coach at Menifee's Paloma Valley High School in 2003.

Some students who knew Marshall have said he never tried to recruit them.

[highlight]Defense lawyer Karen Lockhart said Marshall's belief system seems to contrast his actions because Marshall testified he dated a woman of American Indian descent for two years and has friends who are Mexican.

"You don't have to be white to be my friend," Marshall said. [/highlight]

"Do you dislike people based solely on the color of their skin?" Lockhart asked.

Marshall said he talks to people, then decides if he likes them.

"Do you think people of different races should marry?" she asked.

"No."

Marshall then explained that he would not marry someone of a different race, but noted this is how he conducts his life and not something he would impose on others.

Lockhart also asked Marshall why he got a swastika tattooed on his belly.

"Prison is a very segregated place," Marshall said. "You run with your own race or you suffer the consequences."

Marshall said he got the tattoo in 1992, while in prison.

The defendant's testimony followed a gang expert who, Wednesday morning, reviewed about 30 pictures of Adolph Hitler, flags with swastikas and other white-power propaganda items that law enforcement seized from Marshall's home.

Riverside police Sgt. Frank Assumma read one card taken from Marshall's home that wished him a "Happy Nazi new year."

Assumma testified that Marshall attended a white "hate" rally with one of his two sons and took pictures.

One of the pictures showed Marshall's son Jared with Tom Metzger, one of the nation's most notorious white-power leaders and a former Ku Klux Klan leader.

Members of the neo-Nazi skinhead gang that Marshall is accused of belonging to will set aside their racist views and associate with people from other races when it benefits the gang, Assumma said.

The trial will continue today at the Southwest Justice Center in French Valley.

TRIAL: Prosecutors say the Menifee man shot at a skinhead gang member to teach him a lesson.

A Menifee man admitted Thursday that he illegally possessed guns, holds white supremacist views and sold drugs.

But Howard Michael Marshall denied on the stand that he shot at the gang member who came to his home two years ago.

Marshall, 45, told jurors he fired a revolver into the air five times after being attacked by a neo-Nazi skinhead gang member at his home on July 5, 2004. The gang member, who was not shot, fell to the ground, then fled, Marshall testified.

Marshall is charged with numerous crimes, the most serious of which include attempted murder in connection with the shooting at his parent's Garbani Road ranch and committing crimes to support a white supremacist gang. Marshall has repeatedly denied being a neo-Nazi skinhead gang member, but said his son, Josh, is.

Marshall testified that he feared for his life after insulting the gang and member Jason Mahoney, so he had several guns to protect himself.

Earlier in the trial, Riverside police sergeant and gang expert Frank Assumma, testified Marshall's shooting at Mahoney was an act of gang discipline to put Mahoney in line.

Marshall denied gang membership, but admitted having white supremacist views.

Defense lawyer Karen Lockhart questioned him about the numerous pictures of Adolph Hitler, photos from a rally he attended with his son, and the five Nazi flags that hung in his home.

Lockhart displayed a photo of one document from his home that read: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for while children."

"Do you agree with these words?" Lockhart asked her client, who said "yes."

She also displayed a black-and-white photo of four, emaciated men, some who looked as if they were dead. The men were in a German concentration camp during World War II, Marshall said.

On the back of the photo Marshall wrote: "these lucky (expletive) are alive." Marshall testified that the men in the photo were lucky because they were getting medical attention and survived. Marshall added that he does not hate Jewish people.

The defendant got these pictures, Nazi armbands and other items from a friend as payment for work he did. Marshall said he planned to sell them to pay a defense lawyer, not Lockhart, $2,500 after his August 2004 arrest on suspicion of drug and gun possession.

The trial continues Monday at the Southwest Justice Center in French Valley for Marshall, who faces life in prison if convicted of all charges.
