JERUSALEM (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to invite leaders of the Islamist group Hamas to Moscow is a "knife in the back" for Israel, Education Minister Meir Sheetrit said.

"This initiative is a real knife in the back... because it aims to give international legitimacy to a terrorist group and we must oppose it with all our means," Sheetrit told public radio on Friday.

"What would Moscow say if we invited Chechen representatives (to Jerusalem) in response?" the minister asked.

"Putin is dancing with wolves," charged Housing Minister Zeev Boim in comments carried by the media.

A senior government official, speaking on condition of anonymity Thursday said "the Russians must decide whether they are in the quartet or not."

"When Chechens carry out an attack in Moscow, they call it an act of terror but when it's in Jerusalem they don't. Is the blood of Israelis worth less than the blood of Russians?"

Moscow, unlike the United States and the
European Union, does not consider Hamas a terrorist organisation.

Putin told reporters Thursday he invited Hamas, which won a shock victory in last month's parliamentary poll, to Moscow for talks as the radical group prepares to form a government.

Hamas welcomed the news and said it would accept if offered an official invitation.

And the plot thickens...

I know the debate rages here and there within this movement regarding the sincerity of Putin and Russian nationalism as a whole. Personally, I find it difficult to disregard the fact that Putin is a politician, and an ex KGB agent. I don't know enough about the man to choose a side in the said debate, however I am asking myself: what's in it for him? I can't remember the last time that a politician did the right (or perhaps I should say white) thing, for the right reasons.

I wish the best to Mr. Putin, our Russian Comrades and Hamas as well.

Why does Putin side with the goddamn communist jew russians for "liberating" all those countries as Pat Buchanan bravely poined out?

If he had any balls he would gain respect and love of his people by telling the truth.

I think deep down this bro knows what's up.

But there's a rising politician out there, zhirinosky, that dude, hell yea.

Zirinovsky is a jew and a mentally disturbed person. It doesn't mean that sometimes he's not able to make some bold statements. He actually supports Putin.

Just as modern mass production requires the standardization of commodities, so the social process requires standardization of man, and this standardization is called equality.

The Russian stance does present a different viewpoint from the initial gut reaction of the US and Israel to isolate Hamas, and it is understandable why Israelis and Jews would have adverse reactions to Putin’s invitation. On the other hand, there is a carrot and stick scenario that should be considered. As Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman, stated in the early years of the comic book “With Great Power comes Great Responsibility”. We cannot deny that Hamas was elected democratically, whatever the reason, and we cannot deny that the Palestinian people have a place in the international media. It could be that by acknowledging Hamas’ victory, and thereby legitimizing the group as a political entity, Hamas will be forced to adhere to international norms of conduct and procedures.

If Hamas wants to govern legitimately, and benefit from international recognition and credibility, there are basic guidelines that must be met, creating the carrot and stick scenario. As Lavrov stated recently: “Unless we engage Hamas, which gained power as result of legitimate, free and fair elections, nothing will change”. Even though this thought completely contradicts the gut reaction that is felt in Israel and the US, over the long run the Russian’s might be on the right track toward changing the militant nature of Hamas.
