MARYVILLE — A gunman opened fire in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church earlier today and fatally shot the pastor.

Maryville Police Department reported that the assailant apparently walked up to the stage where the Rev. Fred Winters was preaching and opened fire. The incident took place during the church’s first service at 7110 State Route 162 and there were approximately 150 in worship at the time.

Illinois State Police took over the investigation at the request of Maryville police, said Master Trooper Ralph Timmins.

Timmins said parishioners reported that the alleged assailant walked down an aisle around 9 a.m. toward Winters and the two exchanged words and the man took out a .45 caliber handgun and shot the senior pastor once before the gun jammed.

“The man then took out a knife and began injuring himself,” Timmins said.

Timmins said that two church members tried subduing him and suffered minor knife cuts. He said they were treated and released for their injuries at Anderson Hospital.

The assailant was treated at Anderson Hospital for his injuries and then flown by Arch Air Medical Service Co. to a St. Louis area hospital. The gunmen has not been identified by police.

“We do not know the relationship or why he was here,” he said.

Church members reported that the man wearing a hooded sweatshirt. Winters apparently called the man by name, however several parishioners said they did not know him.

Witnesses reported that the man cut his throat with the knife.

Parishioners arriving at church for the second service were in shock when they learned the pastor had been killed. Many were taken to Bethel Baptist Church in Troy for police questioning.

“Police are talking to as many witnesses as possible,” he said.

Timmins said nearby law enforcement agencies assisted with crowd control and traffic.

The church’s Web site states that there are around 1,200 members and that up to 1,000 people attended the three services on Sunday.

Winters lived with his wife, Cindy, and their children in Edwardsville.

Metro Community Church in Edwardsville will hold a prayer service at 6 p.m. tonight.

The average kwan is of such low quality that he'd shoot himself if he had any self awareness.
