This simple truth escapes 99% of people. Slaves were not cheap.
I don't know how they were perceived by their owners - either as
hired/owned help or simply as some sort of biological, bipedal tool.
Either way, it would not be in the best interest of the owner to abuse
such an investment. I don't mistreat people who I employ any more
than I mistreat any tools/machinery that I own and use to put food
on the table. It just doesn't make any sort of sense to do otherwise.
Certainly there were exceptions, but I seriously doubt that abuse was
the norm.

You should read further, into "Exodus". The Hebrews left Egypt with all sorts of plunder (including the gold for the later building of the golden calf), not including inflicting punishment in the form of plagues. It seems like those two peoples can call it even.
