AUBURN HILLS — Flexible solar panel maker Energy Conversion Devices, which idled a UniSolar plant in Greenville last year, announced Tuesday they were seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Company president and CEO Julian Hawkins, said in a statement that the company’s “current capital structure and legacy costs” were preventing them from making necessary investments in the future of the business.

Auburn Hills-based company filed for bankruptcy in federal court in the Eastern District of Michigan after being unable to come to a deal with bondholders out-of-court.

Analysts have been predicting the company demise for months. The company had suspended operations and put hundreds of employees on furlough in Greenville last year as it sought to cut costs and bring inventory levels down.
