Bedbugs found at second Sabattus school

SABATTUS — Trouble with bedbugs continued Thursday after special sniffing dogs found more of them at the Oak Hill Middle School. WGME-TV reported Thursday night that the dogs found bedbugs on two pieces of band equipment. The equipment was removed and the rest of the school was clean, according to the report. No closure is planned.

The discovery Thursday comes two days after the Sabattus Primary School was closed for what was described as a small infestation. The school was reopened Thursday after the bugs were eliminated with a heat treatment, school officials said. Experts have suggested that the bugs were likely carried into the schools from somebody who brought them their home.

Officials from the Department of Education have said they are working on a protocol to deal with infestations of this type. Meanwhile, schools in surrounding cities and towns are bracing for similar problems. In Lewiston, where bedbugs were reported to be a problem over the summer, one boy was found infested with bedbugs at one of the city schools. That boy was treated and no school closure was necessary.

In recent weeks, bedbugs have attained national attention after they have been found in hotels, business offices, movie theaters and other places where people congregate. Cleaning crews in buildings both locally and nationally have been advised to be on the lookout for the creatures.

In Sabattus, school officials have been meeting with parents to discuss the problem. It took exterminators two days to clean classrooms and buses after the bugs were found at the primary school.
