Student battles hate insignia: Council hears case of shirts at University Mall bearing racist symbolism

by jason lee, the southern

CARBONDALE - A Southern Illinois University Carbondale student is on a mission to rid city stores of a shirt she says depicts a symbol commonly used by white supremacist groups.

Ta-Nika McGee, 27, says several stores in University Mall sell shirts depicting an "Iron Cross" symbol, or an emblem often displayed by hate groups.

The Iron Cross, when portrayed with a swastika in the center, was also worn by German troops during World War II.

"I don't know how a business can come into this community and sell these kinds of things and no one knows about it," McGee told Carbondale City Council members Tuesday night.

McGee said the shirt was being sold at several clothing stores, including Steve & Barry's University Sportswear, Hot Topic, Buckle and Rue 21.

"I'm not here to point the finger," she said. "But I think it's something that people should know about."

According to the Anti-Defamation League, an organization that fights anti-Semitism and bigotry, the Iron Cross is often displayed by neo-Nazi groups, most commonly as jewelry.

"The Iron Cross without the swastika is also frequently used as a hate symbol in the same manner as the Nazi-era Iron Cross," the organization's Web site states. "It is sometimes used for shock effect as it conjures up images of Nazi Germany and its military without being explicitly Nazi itself. In this guise, it is often displayed on clothing and accessories."

However, the symbol is also known to be used by skateboarders and riders of chopper-style motorcycles.

McGee said she was told Tuesday afternoon that Steve & Barry's had agreed to remove the shirt from its Carbondale store. She said she wasn't sure if other stores had done the same.

"They're basically just pulling it because I'm offended," she said. "Obviously there's another form of that shirt somewhere else."

Councilman Steven Haynes echoed McGee's concerns and suggested city officials draft a letter of objection. Haynes also suggested McGee contact the local chapter of the NAACP.

"I have some reservations if we're allowing this type of merchandise in our city," Haynes said.

Mayor Brad Cole said each store was allowed to sell the item under its contract with University Mall.

"There is nothing in their lease agreement that would preclude them from selling these items," said Cole, adding that it's "not the city's role" to police what stores sell as long as it falls under the First Amendment's freedom of speech.

"It's just as much our right not to purchase them or shop at those stores," Cole said.

Do the dipshits even realize it's a cross and it has historical meaning going back well before Hitler and National Socialism?

This beautiful redhead I see occasionally wore that Iron Cross t-shirt one day, so I was pretty psyched until a few days later she had on a dark green tee with that black, pot-smoking, dred-locked singer on it (whose name I can't remember right now.) ::: mad ::: Dumb ass Southern Illinois niggers. I used to have to deal with those subhumans. Every single one of them is named Shineekra Jones, Vageena Johnson, Tanokra Smith or Lashondra Henry with IQs hovering around 80.

They absolutely know this, and that is why they attack the cross.... Jews have been attacking the Christian religion since the day they've been born. Their tactics will never change....

I'm NOT a jew, I just play one on youtube.... :)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. "This cross looks like something a Nazi, or a person who likes Nazis, might wear." That's just completely fricking arbitrary. It's a Maltese Cross, isn't it? Any cross and all crosses could be pulled based on this standard.

I should think Christians have more right to complain about being offended by THE MOST SACRED SYMBOL OF CHRISTIANITY being treated like this, than do nigs who are worried about Nazi Germany.

Anyway, freedom means - "Feel free to use any symbol you like!" There is no getting around that.

A good page on crosses - this one is the "pattee", used since 1234 (at least) by Christians.

What's next, the circle is going to be banned? That was once portrayed with a swastika in its center...

The more they whine and bitch about it, the better chance kids will hear and wonder WTF is so special about the Iron Cross. Hopefully, it will pique their curiosity enough that they go to the library or online to find out more info. Maybe some of them will even wind up here:cheers:

People who belong to hate groups all breathe, the jews should fight the hate and collectively stop breathing.

The Iron Cross goes back to 1813, when Napoleon was the bogeyman/Hitler of his day.

From the news article: According to the Anti-Defamation League, an organization that fights anti-Semitism and bigotry.............

We all notice that every time the jew’s agenda is opposed, it becomes a “media controversy”. And whenever there is a media controversy, the news report will always quote a spokesman from the ADL who invariably gives direction, like an orchestra leader, on the jew party line of that issue. All of the media and lemmings take their cue from these ADL spokesmen. Yes, I know, sometimes instead of the ADL, it will be a rabbi or the Southern Poverty Law Center or a college professor other some “murky think tank group” who will give the cue, but it’s always the jew behind the different spokesmen.

These jew groups that give media direction need to be watched very carefully. They are extremely dangerous people and they should be considered enemy #1. They are more of a threat to White people then all of the niggers and muds combined. These jewish anti-White groups must be compromised with extreme prejudice.

These are not "Iron Cross" T-shirts. They are "West Coast Chopper" shirts that have incorporated the use of a historic symbol that has nothing to do with them or their business, they are trying to increase their brand appeal by using anothers mark.

Hopefully they will get Westcoast Choppers and their stupid wannabe nazi logo taken down. It makes me sick to see a corporation trying to be cool '50s rebel nazi's when they are a bunch of boardroom bolsheviks.

I cant count how many times Ive seen wetbacks with their stupid iron cross stickers pasted to their rear purple tinted windows.
